Art Therapy
What is Art Therapy?
Using Creativity to Express and Heal
Sometimes, it's hard to find the right words to express how you're feeling. This is where using art can be an incredibly powerful tool for your wellbeing.
As recognised by NHS England, art therapy is a way of using the creative process to explore and heal emotional issues. It provides a safe outlet when talking feels too difficult.
There are two main ways to think about this:
-
Formal Art Therapy: This is a form of psychotherapy conducted by a trained art therapist. It's a professional process, often used in a clinical setting, to help people work through significant emotional issues and trauma.
-
Personal Art for Wellbeing: You can also use the principles of art therapy on your own. This is about using creative acts—like painting, drawing, or sculpting—as a personal tool for self-expression, mindfulness, and stress relief. You don't need a therapist to do this, and there are no rules. It's for everyone, anytime.
